Why Private Personal Trainers in NYC Advocate The Paleolithic Diet
Private Personal Training Classes will help you Improve your Health
The modern diet known as the Paleolithic Diet takes its name from the idea that the diet of cave men and women (some protein but a lot of vegetables) is closer to meeting the nutritional needs of humans because we are more genetically similar to our Paleolithic ancestors than to the post-agricultural people whose diet we have adopted.
The hunter-gatherers were largely free of the diseases caused by refined sugar, processed oils, grains, dairy products and salt that is abundant in the traditional diet of most humans. Nutritionists believe that although the consumption of bread, dairy and sugar sustains life through caloric content, it causes the degenerative diseases that contribute to early death.
In modern terms, the Paleolithic Diet translates to eating protein from hunted food: wild game meats, fish, seafood, grass-fed beef and food that can be gathered such as eggs, insects, nuts, seeds, vegetables, mushrooms, herbs and spices. Water and tea are the only liquids this diet advises which means most alcoholic and fermented beverages are restricted.
The “caveman diet” as it is also called was first popularized in the mid 1970s by Walter L. Voegtlin and is not completely accepted by all nutritionists. Voegtlin developed his ideas from the research of anthropologists who realized that Paleolithic man had evolved for millions of years before the Neolithic man, subsisting on a very different diet than the latter. Scientists argue that our genes are not evolving. They remain very similar to the first humans. Changes in diet began about 10,000 years ago with growing grains and cooking legumes. Further changes have occurred in the last century with processed foods, preservatives and meat-industry antibiotics and hormones being added to our food sources, and even more changes in the last two decades in regards to sugar, accelerating the disease process.
The cave man (or woman) probably ate a ton of greens since vegetation was the most available food. In The Paleo Diet, Dr. Loren Cordain says, “We are not eating the foods we are genetically and physiologically adapted to eat (99.9% of our genetic profile is still Paleolithic); and the discordance is proposed to be an underlying cause for much of the “diseases of civilization”, “syndrome X”, obesity, and “diseases of old age” that are so epidemic in our society today.”
Another advantage of the Paleolithic Diet is that consumption of more vegetables means a higher level of alkalinity in the body. It has been suggested that problems with calcium levels (osteoporosis) has more to do with the leakage of calcium through the kidneys (stimulated by high acidity levels and the body’s attempt to balance) than with a problem of too little intake of calcium.
We can’t forget, however, that the cave man exercised a lot more than we do. Keep that in consideration while you’re cooking your kale and collards and trapping your fowl. Try to make time for more grunting in your workout schedule!
